Typeface - what is swap fonts on pageload?

Hi,

I am pretty sure it is mentioned somewhere, but I could not find it. What does:

do?

I think it reduces page loading speeds a bit by using default fonts at the beginning and changing them after the self-hosted fonts have been loaded, but I am not 100% sure.
